How to Make Simple Sweet and Sour Sauce

Sweet and sour sauce was made famous through delicious Chinese cuisine. The little red sauce is extremely versatile and tastes great on almost everything. Sweet and sour sauce is an old standby favorite and has never been so easy to make.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Barbecue sauce (any brand; original barbecue works best)
  • Grape jelly
  • Finely crushed pineapple (optional)
  • Pineapple or orange juice (optional)
  1. Step 1

Pour a bottle or can of barbecue sauce (16 oz.) into a sauce pan or slow cooker.

  2. Step 2

Add half of a small jar (8 oz.) of grape jelly, about 1/4 to 1/2 cup.

  3. Step 3

Stir well and simmer on low for 10 to 15 minutes.

  4. Step 4

To sweeten the sauce a little more you can add 1/8 cup of finely crushed pineapple or pineapple chunks depending on the desired consistency. If you prefer smooth sauce but still wanted the added sweetness, then use 1/8 cup pineapple juice or orange juice.

Tips & Warnings
  • The barbecue sauce makes it a tangy sauce and the grape jelly and pineapple add sweetness. If you like the tangy taste, then leave out the pineapple and/or juice.
  • This sauce works well with frozen meatballs, cocktail sausages, chicken and more.
  • Make sauce first and allow it to simmer with meat so it can marinate through out the day.
  • Use this sauce as a dipping sauce for wontons, egg rolls, chicken nuggets and other finger foods.
  • Stir the sauce periodically or it may burn on the bottom, ruining the flavor of your creation.
  • Allow the sauce to cool slightly before serving in order to avoid burns and mishaps.
