Arming our children with a healthy religious life is the best gift we can give them at a young age. Religion can be confusing to a young mind, and explaining Jesus is very important.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Any explanation of Jesus has to begin with the story of good and bad. Remind your children of the story of Adam and Eve, and why we need saving in the first place. Help your children to understand sin.

  2. Step 2

Next explain why Jesus came in the first place. His walk on the earth was the ultimate act of sacrifice and love, and it begins with why he came.

  3. Step 3

Explain how Christ saved us by dying on the cross. He wanted to atone for our sins. He wanted to show us the way of love and forgiveness. Explain that even when they get in trouble and make mistakes, Jesus forgives them if they ask for it. It is important that they realize that mistakes are normal, and that is why Jesus paid for those mistakes in our place.

  4. Step 4

Take some time to talk about the return of Jesus. Let them know we can look forward to him returning to us and taking us to a wonderful place in heaven. Explain the importance of forgiveness of sins in others.

  5. Step 5

Finally, it would be a good idea to talk about faith to your child and why it is so important to Jesus. If we believe in him and have faith that he will return, then we will be with him in heaven. Explain that others believe differently, and it is not right to judge them for doing so. Explain why you believe in Christ, and why your child should too.

on 8/11/2009 Thanks for the great ideas on how to discuss these important topics with the wee one. It is never to early to begin believing.

on 9/29/2008 This is such valuable information to share with kids, and the earlier the better. Life is so much better when there is a guiding compass for right and wrong, and there could be no better compass than the Lord.

Thanks for sharing this!
