Ease Back Into School

As a teacher since 1995, it has taken me a long time and a lot of trial and error to learn how to ease the kids back into school after a vacation. I would like to share some of the strategies I use to help both the students and myself ease back into school.

From Quick Guide: Back-To-School Checklist
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make your thematic units continue through a break rather than end and start when they begin and end. For many years I would end a thematic unit right before a vacation (holiday or spring) and then start a new unit on our first day back. Then one year, I had a unit last a week after a vacation—and found that the kids picked up right where they left off—and there was a lot less frustration and confusion.

  2. Step 2

Wait a few days before introducing new concepts. Rather than hitting the kids with new concepts the first few days back from a vacation, try to wait a few days.

  3. Step 3

Don't rearrange the seating plan or make dramatic changes to the physical environment of the classroom.

  4. Step 4

Give the kids homework over the break that will lead into what you are doing the first few days back from vacation.

  5. Step 5

Spend the first few days reviewing past lessons before moving onto new concepts.
