Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Phone book
  • Phone
  1. Step 1

Join or contact a local chapter of the National Speleological Society (NSS) also known as a ‘Grotto’. These groups routinely explore wild caves and are a great source of information on caves. Information can be found at www.caves.org.

  2. Step 2

Call your local Chamber of Commerce. They will often have information regarding local caves or individuals and/or organizations that might have information regarding local caves. The Chamber of Commerce’s contact information will be listed in your local phone book.

  3. Step 3

Speak with a nearby state park ranger. Rangers will be able to tell you if the local state park has any caves worthy of exploring. They may even have information regarding other caves located out of the area. State park phone numbers can be found in the phone book under the parks and recreation heading.

  4. Step 4

Contact your County Engineer. These individuals know the local landscape and will be able to tell you if there are any caves locally. You can call your county office to find contact information for the County Engineer.

  5. Step 5

Contact the State Department of Natural Resources. Your state’s official website should have contact information listed.

  6. Step 6

If you hear of a cave by name, conduct an Internet search. The location, environment and history of the cave may be available on a common Internet search.

Tips & Warnings
  • The easiest way to find a cave is to get in touch with a local chapter of National Speleological Society. Go to www.caves.org
  • When planning a caving trip, remember that the NSS has a minimum requirement of at least three persons per exploration trip as well as three sources of light per person.
  • Remember that not every cave is easy to explore. Be sure to do research.
