Tie a Modified Windsor Knot
Tie a Modified Windsor Knot

Here's a relatively simple way to tie a classic V-shaped tie knot that is less bulky than a Windsor knot and is easier to get the ends even.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Roll shirt collar up and place the tie around your neck with the narrow end on your left hanging down to between the fourth and fifth button from the top. The label side of the tie should face your shirt.

  2. Step 2

Grasp the left (narrow) end of the tie with your right hand and the right (wide) end of the tie with your left hand. Draw the wide end UNDER the narrow end with your left hand and pass the end through the 'Y' formed by the two ends. This will invert the wide end as you draw it through.

  3. Step 3

Use your right hand to grasp the wide end of the tie, which is now reversed and on your right side, and pass it over the front of the 'Y' and wrap it underneath the 'Y' from left to right.

  4. Step 4

Pull the tip of the wide end up through the 'Y' and insert it in the wrap you just made. Pull the long end down through the wrap with your left hand while holding the short end with your right hand. All parts of the knot will be right-side-up, and you are ready to finish the knot.

  5. Step 5

Pull the knot tighter with tugs on the wide end and pinch it to form a V-shaped knot. Slide knot up to collar with left hand, holding short end with your right hand. Pinch and adjust the knot shape and slide knot to final position.
