With the ever increasing prices on everything from oil, to gas, to groceries, it is always good to find new ways to cut costs in any way possible. Here are just a few easy things that can be done around the house that can cut your water bill in two and has for myself as well as for some of my family.

From Quick Guide: Going Green at Home
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Thick Plastic Gallon Jug (1-2 per toilet in your home)
  • New Water Saving Shower heads (2)
  • Pliers or wrench
  1. Step 1

The average toilet flushes about 3 to 5 gallons of water each time you flush it. The first thing you can do to save water is to put one to two thick plastic gallon jugs inside the tank of your toilet depending on how many can fit.

  2. Step 2

Fill each plastic jug with water and place around the insides of your tank, not to obstruct the flushing mechanism. Some people have even used bricks. Milk Jugs are not thick enough plastic, so try to use bleach plastic jugs or something similar that has the thick plastic that will not erode away.

  3. Step 3

Replace two shower heads in your home with water saving shower heads.

  4. Step 4

The water saving shower heads are relatively inexpensive at your hardware store about ten to thirty dollars depending on the brand and extras. Pick out the best one for you and bring it back home to put in place of your old ones.

  5. Step 5

Use the wrench or pliers to remove the old shower head, normally simply by twisting it to the left like a screw to remove it, and then put the new one in its place, again normally by simply screwing it to the right, make sure the new seal is in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • The more things you replace with the new energy and water saving feature, the more you will save in the long run, you can start with one and work your way up to more.
