Things You'll Need:
- Food items of your choice
- Construction paper
- Cardboard
- Adult costumes (i.e. Witch, scarecrow or skeleton)
- Crepe paper streamers
- Use of basement or room
- Blankets
- Red and black lights
- Flashlights
- Haunted or festive music
-
Step 1
Decide if you want your haunted house to be a crawl or walk through experience. If you choose crawling, try to have it in a room or basement with carpeting.
-
Step 2
Make the room a little dark, but not pitch black because that would be too scary for some kids. Use different colored bulbs to illuminate the space. If you are making crawl tunnels put flashlights throughout. If they are walking, give them a flashlight to carry.
-
Step 3
Choose an escort and greeter and have both dress up as a witch or scarecrow to enhance the experience. Make sure all your “characters” act friendly and not scary.
-
Step 4
Divide the space or tunnel off into "rooms" for scenes. Use blankets or screens to divide the space. You could also use a whole second floor and have each room as a scene.
-
Step 5
Use items from around the house to help decorate the scenes. For example, the first scene could be a lab with "brains", "bones" and a heart in bowls. Don't let them look in the bowl, just hold it up high and have them put their hands in it. Use spaghetti for the brains, a small pork roast as a heart and plastic or chicken bones. Another scene could feature a skeleton doing something funny, like playing a banjo or singing and dancing. A fan tunnel is another fun idea for a crawl through haunted house.
-
Step 6
Have things hanging from the ceiling like plastic spiders, streamers and beads.
-
Step 7
Make a star tunnel or room with glow in the dark stars. They are inexpensive and are easy to remove.
-
Step 8
Play a haunted or festive tape for effect.
