Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
You’re sitting home with your significant other and you both decide that you mutually want to go to the movies and he or she suggests a romantic comedy, serious melodrama, or what I deem as a chick flick. My first response usually involves cringing inwardly. When it manifests outwardly it turns into a lukewarm smile. I think of how I could get out of it.
Step2
One good way I get out of going to a chick flick is to have her go to the movie with her girlfriends. They have a night out and everyone benefits. I introduce the idea and try to sound as if it were hers so she can take credit and start planning a night out. That usually works wonders.
Step3
If we had recently seen a chick flick then I tell her it’s my turn to pick out the movie. That usually entails blood, action, gore, martial arts and gratuitous sex. What better type of movie is there? Oh sure, sometimes I want a deep movie that I can discuss the plot, characterization and other attributes, but I will usually settle for a lot less. I want to be entertained when I go to the movies. Entertainment does not equate with chick flicks.
Now, I will be the first one to tell you that I do not purport to be macho, I am far from it. However, I realize my likes and dislikes in movies.
Step4
Another way to getting out of seeing a chick flick without hurting her feelings is to bribe her. I tell her if we see my type of movie I will spring for dinner, buy her some apparel or something I know she wants. I really do not like chick flicks. I tried to think of why. I would state that all chick flicks are unrealistic but then she could point out that one hundred percent of my movies are unrealistic. Perhaps it’s the underlying premise. Love can conquer all despite any adversity does not sit well with me. Chick flicks utilize principles that make me uncomfortable. The unbridled concept that love has a binding force that can overcome all of life’s problems obviously have never been married. The unrealistic versions portrayed in the movies make me flinch. A dating or married couple in real life are vastly different to the point of me being turned off by it.
Step5
Nine times out of ten I can get her to see my movie. I usually promise that if we see my movie we will see her movie the next time. If she forgets, then I get to see another one of my movies. However, if she reminds me of my promise I employ a different tactic. I tell her that if we see my movie, we will rent one of hers. If we rent one of hers it will be a lot cheaper and I can fall asleep if need be. I would be upset if I paid top dollar for some movie I will fall asleep at.
Step6
The reason she is so accommodating is the fact that she usually likes my type of movies in addition to her love of chick flicks. I feel blessed to have her appreciate action type movies. Nevertheless, I don’t usually get out of seeing a chick flick Scott free. I relent only when pressed.
Step7
Try employing some of the strategies I mentioned. They usually work and that leaves more movies that you like that you can go to.

Tips & Warnings

  • Respect your partner's opinion. If he or she wants you to go, go
  • Don't fight over going to see a chick flick. Suck it up sometimes and go.
