Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Developing your mind with simple exercises is a great way to stimulate the grey matter in your head. The simple truth is, and I know you have ready this many times, that the mind is a muscle like the ones you have below your head. If you want bigger biceps, triceps and all of the other muscles, you would exercise to make them bigger. The same is applicable to the mind.
Step2
First I want to clarify what I think the difference between what the brain is and what the mind is. The brain is the physical part of the mind. It houses the grey matter. The mind is the actual working piece. The brain is the hardware and the mind is the software. Enough said.
Step3
A simple exercise to increase your mind is to brush your teeth using your less dominant hand. If you are right handed, try using your left hand. It will appear strange to your mind and that is key. It will force your mind to pay attention. You could brush your teeth with your dominant hand in your sleep, but try to do it with the less dominate one and you would have to remain awake. That holds true for brushing your hair and lifting the milk container or the water jug. Anything that you do using your dominant hand will become routine. You want to get out of your routine by doing everything with your other hand.
Step4
An additional exercise is when you are home late at night and it is dark inside your home, leave the lights off. Try visualizing or picturing where your furniture is and attempt to navigate around them. It’s a lot harder to do than you realize especially if you have a person in your home that likes to rearrange your furniture frequently.
Step5
Another way to stimulate your mind with simple exercises is to take a road trip without using a map, or any other navigation aid. It doesn’t have to be far away, just use roads that are less traveled by you. You could even have someone you know take you somewhere and you have to find your way back. Being directionally dysfunctional, that would be quite challenging to me. I would have to have someone in the car with me or I could end up in another state (which has happened!) What that does is it forces your mind to pay attention to details that you would normally take for granted. It uses muscles that are hardly used or never used.
Step6
There is no limit to the exercises you could come up with to stave off a sedentary mindset. Use them frequently or make up your own, coupled with a good diet, makes your mind more alert and able to function at a higher level.
