Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is released by gas furnaces, propane stoves, charcoal grills, cars and portable generators. Most carbon monoxide poisonings occur in the winter and to the elderly. Because the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, lightheadedness and nausea, people don't often realize that poisonous gas is the cause of their complaints.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Carbon monoxide detector
Step1
Install battery operated carbon monoxide detectors in your home and change the battery when you change the clock for daylight savings time. Many municipalities now require carbon monoxide monitors in the home.
Step2
Never leave a car running inside a garage.
Step3
Never use a gas oven to heat your home. Do not burn charcoal inside your house (even in the fireplace).
Step4
Be sure that the vents on your fireplace or stove are open and vented to the outside of your home.
Step5
Never use generators, camp stoves or any type of gas or oil burning device inside. Don't even use them outdoors near a window.
Step6
Have a certified technician check your heating system, water heater and other oil or gas burning appliances yearly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning might be the cause of your feeling ill.
  • Check on the elderly and infirm to be sure they are safe.
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal. Waste no time in calling for help if you believe someone has been exposed.
