How to Use Your Computer to Hold or Forward Postal Mail

Moving, going out of town or relocating is a big task and you could use all the help you can get. Do not bother your family, friend or neighbor to take in the mail. With a click of your mouse you can have the post office hold onto it for you until you get back. No fountain pens, forms or paper necessary.

You can avoid running to the post office needlessly. Manage your postal mail right from your home computer.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Internet Access (preferably high speed)
  • Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows XP
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer or other web browser
  • Date of vacation or move
  • New address (if applicable)
  • Half hour or less of your time
  1. Step 1

    Open your web browser and go to the US Post Office website.

  2. Step 2

    Click on the "receiving mail" column to the right of your computer screen.

  3. Step 3

    If you have a change of address, go ahead and click on that link. Read and agree with the conditions by checking the box and clicking OK. Then, Fill in the screens as needed through the fifth step which is confirmation.

  4. Step 4

    If you want your mail to be forwarded, click on the "mail forwarding" link. Agree with the privacy act statement by clicking on the box to check mark it.

    Fill in the screens until you complete all five steps and receive confirmation.

  5. Step 5

    If you just want to hold your mail through a leave of absence or vacation, click the "hold mail" link the fourth choice down in that same column. Fill in the zip below the box on "complete a request". Click go and agree with the privacy act statement. Fill in the screens as needed, click continue on the bottom until your request is completed.

Tips & Warnings
  • While you are on the post office website you can even order postage stamps and have them sent to your home or business.
  • You may want to call the post office in approximately 10 days to make sure your request is running smoothly.
  • Ensure your mail is delivered to your new home or business when you arrive. If not, contact the local post office in your new neighborhood.
  • Be sure you complete your requests well in advance of either moving or leaving town. It will take the post office some time to process your request.
