Step 1
Take a dance class. Belly dance improves your posture while toning your stomach and legs. It also helps build your overall core strength. And it can be freeing to spend one hour per week in an all-female environment. Sahara Dance and Joy of Motion offer classes year-round.

Step 2
Take a free lesson at a club. Local dance schools periodically offer a free short lesson at a few of the international-flavored clubs in Washington, DC. Lessons are generally held on weekend nights, around 8 or 9 p.m., before the club gets busy.

Step 3
See a performance in a restaurant. Every week, several DC restaurants host one or two belly dancers, and the performances are usually free with food and drink purchase. A few of the best places to catch a show are Lebanese Taverna, Zaytinya, Skewers and Prince Café. All restaurants feature Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine.

Attend the Capital Fringe Festival. A new tradition in DC, the Fringe Festival features the best of the city’s offbeat arts and entertainment. Belly dance fits right into that category, and local dance schools are usually on hand to offer demonstrations.

Watch a student dance recital. Sahara Dance produces an annual student show. Both ensembles and soloists perform, and skill levels range from beginner to professional.

Appreciate the skill required to master belly dance. Professional dancers study for many years to become proficient and follow rigorous practice schedules to maintain their skills.
