Plan ahead. Go visit the state that you plan to move to, so that you can see how the state lives. If possible try doing it at least a year in advance and if you know someone who might live there, ask them to show you around the area so that you can become familiar with it.

If you don't have any money saved up, but know people who live in the place your planning to move to, ask if you could stay at their place until you find a place of your own. Look for work in the new state before you move, even if you haven't told your current job that you are leaving. Or find out if you company has available openings in the state you are moving to, you could get lucky and find the same or similar job as the one you hold now.

If you don't know anyone in the state that you want to move to, try to save as much as you can at least a year before, and begin looking for work and a place to live at least a couple of months before so that you are not homeless and jobless in a place you do not know.

If you are married and with kids, one of you (usually the husband) can go visit the state so that they can get things ready to bring the rest of the family to finalize the move. If your move needs to happen in a few months then if you can travel between states, try to do so while you stabilize yourself in the new place you are moving to.

    Tips & Warnings

    • It is much easier to travel between states if you are single and the distance between the state you live and the state you're moving is not that far. Like moving from New Jersey to Connecticut would be much easier than moving from New Jersey to California.

    • Relocating to another state is not impossible if you plan ahead, save money and make certain that your family will be okay after the move.

    • Planning ahead at least six months to a year can make it easier on families with small children because children will adjust more quickly to a gradual move than one that is made on impulse.

    • If the only reason you are moving is to be with someone that you are dating, think hard as to whether or not this would be right for you.

    • Even with planning, you may experience melancholy, which is normal, especially if you are leaving your family to be with your own and if you've never lived anywhere in the world except where you were born.

    • If after a year or two living there you still feel this way or you get worse seek professional help
