These Hungarian butterhorn cookies are a traditional Christmas cookie in my family but delicious all year round. Light and flaky, the vanilla and sour cream make this a favorite under the tree.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 egg whites beaten stiff.
  • Add 1 cup sugar (1 tbsp. at a time)
  • 1/3 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

    How to Make Hungarian Butterhorn Cookies

  1. Step 1

    Cut butter and yeast into flour and salt like for pie crust.

  2. Step 2

    Mix in eggs, sour cream and vanilla.

  3. Step 3

    Divide into eight portions. Chill

  4. Step 4

    Roll out thin using powder sugar on the board.
    Cut into eight wedges. Put filling on wedge, roll.

  5. The Filling

  6. Step 1

    Mix all ingredients and spread evenly over wedges.

  7. Step 2

    Fold wedges into crescent roll shape

  8. Step 3

    Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't skimp on ingredients. Use real sugars and butter to make the very best butterhorns.

on 10/14/2008 These sound very similar to what my Great-Grandma Lehmann (Becker) brought over from Austria-Hungary. But she called her's Katz-Um-Soxs, or Cat in the sock. We generally only make them at Christmas because of the work involved.
