Oftentimes we see little girls' bedrooms decorated in pink, ruffles, frills and too much flowers--all the girly things! There is nothing wrong with doing so, but at times the little girl in your life may not be playing with dolls like other little girls do. Here are some ideas to decorate a room of a little girl who is not too much of a girly girl.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Paint (other than pink or purple)
  • Fabric with patterns other than flowers
  • Bedding and curtains with no lace or ruffles
  • Accessories that are not too feminine
  • Furniture with clean lines
Step1
Paint: In order to avoid making the room too girly, avoid the girly colors like pink, purple and the proverbial fuchsias. You can choose other colors suitable for a girl that are not too girly. Try a light blue color, copper color, mint green, creamy yellow or pale orange.
Step2
Faux Finishes: Paint with stripes to add more character and dimension or use sponge painting technique to add depth to the room. There are other faux painting techniques on the walls and ceiling to make your little girl's room attractive.
Step3
Furnishings: Avoid too much intricate details on your little girl's furniture. For example, instead of opting for an armoire that has intricate rose carvings or with doors and drawers panted with flowers, opt for a light stained furniture with clean lines. A white painted dresser with matching desk and chair would work in a little girl's room who is not too girly.
Step4
Bedding: Cover the bed with fabric that doesn't have too much floral prints. Keep it simple, yet feminine. If your little girl loves butterflies, try adding a butterfly duvet cover. Avoid using ruffles and laces on the bedding.

Choose a striped fabric for the throw pillow that complements the color on the walls, curtains and duvet cover.
Step5
Window Covers: Avoid using lacy or ruffled curtains. Avoid also those princess theme ready-made curtains. Use blinds or window valance and curtains with striped borders instead. White plantation shutters would do the trick as well. They are easy to maintain and offers enough privacy and sun protection!
Step6
Accessories: Decorate using less floral. Instead of adding a lampshade covered with rose petals, use a plain lamp and tie a ribbon around the lampshade. Have your little girl's name framed and then hang on the wall to add personalization. Add accessories that your little girl likes, for example butterflies, dragon flies or horses. Add stuffed toys but do not add too much dolls everywhere. One or two dolls would do. The key is not to overdo decorating with girly stuff.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you must use pink, use it as an accessory color only and not as the main color.
  • Don't go too bland or too neutral so that your little girl won't feel bored in her room. Remember the object here is not to decorate with too much girly stuff but it doesn't mean leaving the room bare or bland.

on 1/22/2008 I'll keep these ideas in mind. We are having a little girl (our first) in May of this year. We're going to start out completely over-the-top girly with her nursery, but in time, if it's too much, we will consider toning it down. Good article. Thank you!

on 1/7/2008 I saw one that had black with a rainbow across it. It was marvelous, and not too girly. If the little girl likes skateboarding or baseball, you could use those themes as well!

on 1/7/2008 Yep we are almost out the ruffles and frills stage over here. I will have to give this a try to give her room more of a young woman feel. Thanks.
