  • Time
  • DIY shows
  1. Step 1

Decide on a budget. Allow for some flexibility. If you have budgeted $200 then allow for an extra 10%.

  2. Step 2

Look through free store or product catalogs. Borrow decorating books from the library. Shop Amazon.com for decorating books at a low price.

  3. Step 3

Once you have an idea of the "look" you are going for start searching for bargain replicas. Go to discount stores such as Marshall or Target.
    Wait for store sales.

  4. Step 4

Shop stores like Home Depot or Lowes for paint and hardware. These stores also offer classes for do it yourself projects. These classes will save you money.

  5. Step 5

Watch the do it yourself shows on television. These shows' home improvement or decorating pros offer invaluable and free advice.

  6. Step 6

Do the work yourself. Make sure that you are prepared to do the work yourself. If it is too technical or dangerous hire a pro to do it.
Make you sure you hire a reputable contractor to do any work on your home. Get references and shop around. Work by contract only!

  7. Step 7

Start off slowly when decorating. You do not need to decorate your home all at once. Your lifestyle and tastes may change in the future.
Choose pieces or items that make you feel at home. This can be done over time as the budget allows. You and your pocketbook will happier in the long run!

Tips & Warnings
  • Read up on how to do the home improvement you are planning. Even if you do not do the work yourself this can help you from getting overcharged on a project.
  • Unless you are a wiring pro get an electrician to do electrical work.
  • Always wear saftey equipment such as gloves or eye goggles.
  • Make sure all tools and equipment are in good working order.
  • Use common sense when tackling a project!
