Tie a Figure Eight Follow-Through

The figure eight is the all-purpose rock climbing knot. This knot is used to connect your harness to the rope.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Holding the rope in your left hand, cross the end of the rope over the front of the rope.

  2. Step 2

    Cross behind.

  3. Step 3

    Come back to the front and drop it down through the loop.

  4. Step 4

    Loop the end of the rope through a harness or carabiner.

  5. Step 5

    Go back up through the loop.

  6. Step 6

    Go around the back.

  7. Step 7

    Go down through the loop.

  8. Step 8

    Go around the front.

  9. Step 9

    Go around the back and up through the loop.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you leave enough rope dangling so you can tie another knot. It doesn't really matter what type of knot you tie, but dynamic ropes have a way of stretching, and if you don't leave enough of an end, the rope can come undone.
