The figure eight is the all-purpose climbing knot. This knot is useful in setting up rappels or making it so you clip into the rope with a carabiner on your harness.
Fold a couple feet of rope. This is called a bight.
Holding the bight in your left hand, cross the end of the bight over the front of the double-thick rope.
Cross behind.
Come back to the front and drop it down through the loop.
