Your furry friend is no longer in his safe little home. You miss him and you're worried about him. Catching an escaped critter (Guinea pig, mouse, hamster, iguana, etc) isn't as difficult as it may seem.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • His/her food dish
  • Food
  • Patience
  • A net or quick reflexes
  1. Step 1

The best way to recapture your animal is with food. If you know the general area where your furry friend is hiding (either indoors or outside), leave some food in his bowl.

  2. Step 2

Watch for your your critter to come for a snack.

  3. Step 3

Use the net or your hands to grab him. DON'T run up on him. It will startle him and trying to get him back will NOT be easy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do use food and treats (even little human goodies could work).
  • Remember that he's probably quite nervous and frightened, being out of his regular environment and he probably does NOT KNOW you personally (so he doesn't know whether you're friend or foe)
  • Also remember to leave his cage open- sometimes they'll just come back on their own.
  • Don't scare him. Move carefully and slowly.
  • Don't place the food in any spot that could leave your little critter vulnerable to other animals (either indoors or outside).

on 5/1/2008 We had an errant guinea pig roaming the house for months. Eventually, we gave up trying to catch him. We put his cage down near where we suspected he lived and put food and water in it.

Every evening, he would go into his cage and eat. One night, I heard him inside his cage, snuck up on him and closed the door.

Still, there was something a bit sad about caging him. My mother agreed. (I was a teenager.) So, we let him out again the next day, and every night we would see him enter his cage for food.

P.S. We also had a chameleon that lived in the African violets for years.
