Organize Audio Samples Using iTunes

In the recording studio there is often a vast library of audio samples. These samples can be anywhere from 1-second-long to 5 minutes, in some cases.

It is a good practice to create an easy way to navigate these samples.

I have stumbled upon a simple method for organizing your sample library using iTunes.

Things You'll Need

  • A Sample Library
  • iTunes music application on either a Mac or PC computer

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the iTunes application.

In much the same way we organize our songs and albums using playlists, we can apply a very similar method for organizing the samples.

    • 2

Once you have opened iTunes, locate the samples that you intend to import.

Click "New Playlist" in the iTunes file menu.

The playlist will immediately be created in the playlist window of the iTunes application interface.

Now, name the playlist so that it corresponds with the sample folder you wish to add. For instance, the sample folder "Cat Meows" should have a playlist with the same name.

    • 3

Highlight the samples within the sample folder and drag them into the corresponding playlist.

Once they have been successfully copied into the playlist they will be available to preview.

    • 4

Highlight the first sample and press the space bar (playback).

You should now hear the sample played back.

You can now scroll through the samples and audition them individually.

    • 5

Repeat these steps for all other sample folders in your library.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are several third-party manufacturers who offer sample library databases, but are often very expensive. The best thing about using this method is that the software is free. The iTunes application usually comes bundled with all new computers.
