How to Draw a Silhouette
Follow these basic steps to learn how to draw a traditional silhouette and then let your imagination run free and play with different colors and styles.
Things You'll Need
- Tracing paper
- Light source
- Tape
- Sheet of clear glass (can be in a frame)
- Pencil
- Sharp cutting scissors or exacto knife

Tape the tracing paper onto the glass. Prop the glass up somewhere stable where you can place your light source (spotlight, candle or flashlight) behind the glass. Leave room for your subject between the glass and the light source.

Place your subject, in profile, behind the glass and adjust everything so that the image is in sharp focus on the paper.

Trace the profile shadow with your pencil. Keep it is simple as possible. Ignore stray hairs or anything unusual throwing off the shape.

Make any adjustments after you get the general likeness and make sure you have clear, flowing lines. You may also reduce it or enlarge it at this point if you like.

Cut the silhouette from the paper and transfer the outline to whatever medium you are using. Finish by painting in whatever style you choose.

Experiment with different colors and textures rather than the traditional black on white for a new look.
