Transferring domains isn't intrinsically difficult; it's just that the losing registrar has the incentive to hide the instructions because transfers away mean lost business.

This how-to takes you through the process of freeing up a domain name at Wild West and transferring it to eNom.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A domain registered at Wild West Domains
  • Your login and password for your Wild West account
  • Login and password information for your account at eNom, eNomCentral, or BulkRegister
  1. Step 1

Verify that the domain name is eligible for transfer -- that is, that the name has been registered for at least 60 days, it's been at least 60 days since the last time the Registrant contact information was changed, that the domain is not expired, and it's not in "client update prohibited" status.

  2. Step 2

The Administrative contact for the domain name okays the transfer by email, so the first step is to confirm that the Administrative contact information, especially the email address, is correct at Wild West.

Log on to your account at Wild West.

  3. Step 3

Navigate to the contact information for the domain name you want to transfer.

  4. Step 4

Update the Administrative contact information if necessary.

  5. Step 5

The next step is to obtain the domain authorization code, which you must supply in the transfer request.

Call Wild West’s tech support at 480-624-2500, and ask them to send you the authorization code for the domain name.

  6. Step 6

The third step in preparing the domain name for transfer is to unlock it at Wild West.

Log on to your account at WildWestDomains.com.

  7. Step 7

On the "Domains" menu, click "My domain names".

  8. Step 8

Click the domain name you want to transfer.

  9. Step 9

In the "Settings" section, next to the "Locked" status, click the "Change" link.

  10. Step 10

    Select "Unlock" and click "OK".

  11. Step 11

Now you're ready to create the transfer request at eNom.

Log on to your account at eNom, eNomCentral, or BulkRegister.

  12. Step 12

In the "DOMAINS" menu, click "transfer a domain name".

  13. Step 13

Select "Auto verification" and click "next".

  14. Step 14

Type in the domain name you want to transfer, a comma, a space, and then the authorization code. If you have more domains, hit "Enter" and type in the information for the next domain on a new line. Repeat for each domain you're transferring, one per line.

  15. Step 15

Set the Registrar Lock, Auto-Renew, Whois, and Password options as you wish.

  16. Step 16

    Click "next".

  17. Step 17

    Click "submit".

  18. Step 18

When you (or the Whois contacts listed at Go Daddy) receive the email from eNom asking for approval of the transfer, do so by following the instructions in the email.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are a small number of unscrupulous businesses that "hijack" names -- transfer unlocked domains to themselves, effectively stealing them. Once you unlock your name, it's advisable to submit the transfer request at eNom quickly, to reduce the time window for any potential hijackers.
  • Make sure the transfer email that you approve is eNom's, not from one of these hijackers!
