Simchat Torah is the celebration of the conclusion of the Torah, and start of the Torah for the new year. It is a joyous time involving a community and the Torah. Often, people will celebrate by drinking alcoholic beverages.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A synagogue

Step1
Find a local celebration. These will likely take place at a synagogue, Jewish Community Center, or Chabad house.
Step2
Dress modestly. Most observant Jews are offended if you wear revealing clothes that do not fit more traditional defenitions of modest.
Step3
Go the the celebration. At the party, you will dance with the Torah, say a set of blessings, sing, and have l'chaims (drinks.) It is a festive time. Make sure to go with an open mind and have fun!
Step4
While the holiday is 'Yom Tov', or a day where observant Jews will not drive or use electricity, head home safely. If you had drinks, be responsible.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look into the blessings before hand. The process of the evening may be confusing if you do not know what is going on.
  • Ask questions if you do not understand something. Learning is a major cornerstone of Judaism.
