Taiwan is a safe and fun destination but it is an unfamiliar destination for most North Americans. This is unfortunate because with a little planning, visitors will find themselves warmly welcomed by the island’s residents. Read on to learn how to travel around Taiwan.

From Quick Guide: Asian Adventure
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Money
  • Chinese-English dictionary
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

Get a visa. Taiwanese visas are very easy to obtain for most travelers. Many tourists are given an automatic one month visa upon arrival and a two month visa if it applied for in the traveler’s home country before departure.

  2. Step 2

Choose the time of year you would like to go. Taiwan is in sub-tropical Asia and can get very hot in the summer. The winters are relatively mild with temperatures rarely dropping below 8 degrees C. Travel in the spring and fall is excellent although the latter is typhoon season.

  3. Step 3

Pick out the major destinations. Taiwan is a small island but there is lots to do. A visitor could easily spend a week seeing the sites around the capital Taipei. Further down the west coast are the larger cities of Taichung and Kaohsiung where nightlife abounds. The old capital of Tainan is a treasure trove for history buffs. The east coast of Taiwan is relatively unspoiled and offers towering mountains and blue seas.

  4. Step 4

Decide on a mode of travel. Taiwan has an excellent rail system and abundant taxis. It is also possible to rent a car in the major cities. For the more adventurous, it is possible to rent large scooters fully capable of touring the island. Taiwanese driving is much different than that of the west (read: dangerous) and your health insurance should be paid up.

  5. Step 5

Consider alternative forms of travel. Many places in Taiwan offer short language and art courses. Some travelers may prefer to choose a city they enjoy and stay there for a month, making friends an improving themselves. It is also possible to stay in Buddhist temples for mediation courses.
