Compost can be used to fertilize your garden to help it grow more heartily, and it provides an eco-friendly use for your garbage and other organic waste. A compost heap makes it easier to recycle by simply heaving the remnants into your bin, and letting nature process it into a nutrient rich tool. The following steps make it easy to find free ingredients to keep your compost heap full and functioning.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bagging lawnmower
  • Initiative
  1. Step 1

Go to your local coffee shop and ask to take away their leftover used grinds. They no longer have any use for the shop and are a source of nitrogen for your heap.

  2. Step 2

Talk to the zookeepers at your local zoo about taking home the manure. If you choose to do this, make sure you have a lidded container for transport and a few plastic bags just in case of a spill.

  3. Step 3

Stop by your neighbors' houses and ask for their old newspapers. Shred them up and add them to your heap to increase the carbon levels.

  4. Step 4

Call the lumber department of your local home improvement store and inquire as to how they dispose of their sawdust. If they don't already reuse it, ask to collect it once a month.

  5. Step 5

Make use of the cold embers in your fireplace and scrape them out to add to your compost pit. The carbon they add to your compost is almost as necessary as the warmth they were created by. Keep in mind that the wood ash is very high in alkaline, and should only be added a little at a time.

  6. Step 6

Bag your lawn clippings. If you do not use chemical fertilizers, these grass remnants break down easily and enhance the nitrogen levels of your heap.

  7. Step 7

Call your town hall and see if they offer a composting kit or if they know of any locals with any of the above materials to give away. Sometimes businesses will let the municipality know of such availability.
