"Going green" has become a household phrase in a lot of areas of the world. For some reason, though, communities are not focusing on the problem of water pollution in their area and tend to rely on the public works departments and local politicians to tackle this problem. Take the initiative and start reducing the water pollution in your community by following these tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Write your congressman. The best way to increase awareness about your area’s water pollution is to write or call your local representative about your concern. They are usually in contact with the necessary officials that can initiate community involvement in this issue.
Step2
Keep your pollutants out of the sewer. By leveling off your front yard, adding pavers at the edge of your property and keeping liquid waste contained, you can stop your yard from adding to the contaminants flowing down the drainage ditches and into our lakes and rivers.
Step3
Make it a group effort. Get involved with your communities clean up activities. If none exist, contact your local town hall to see how you can go about getting one started.
Step4
Keep your vehicle in good shape. Not only can vehicle emissions pollute the air, but leaking fluids from the transmission, fuel lines or oil filter can end up in the sewer to pollute the local standing water supply. Keep your vehicle in top shape to keep you and your environment safe.
Step5
Keep to the natives. Instead of filling your garden with high-maintenance plants and grass, try and find native plant species and ground covers that will require less chemicals and water to grow. You’ll save money and add to the growth of indigenous plant species.
Step6
Attend town hall meetings. Your local planning and zoning board probably meets once a month to make decisions as to the property and land in the area. Cast your vote for clean-water bills and erosion protection plans.
