German Lasagna is a great mixture of pasta, sauce, cheeses and meat, and it's easy to make. Originally the recipe was called German Meatloaf, but through the years has changed to German Lasagna, as it is so much more than meat loaf.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1-lb. box of curly-edged lasagna noodles
  • 2½ lbs. of ground beef
  • 1 26.5-oz. can of Four Cheese Spaghetti sauce
  • 1 26.5-oz. can Garlic and Herb Spaghetti sauce
  • 2 boxes of 8-oz. cream cheese
  • 1 16-oz. container of sour cream
  • 1 2.5-oz. box of onion soup mix--use 1 to 1 1/3 packets soup mix, flavoring with mix until desired taste
  • 2 8-oz. packages of shredded 4-cheese mixture, or shredded cheese of your choice
  • 2 tsps. of garlic powder
  • 2 tsps. of onion powder
  • 1 tsp. of salt
  • 1 tbs. canola cooking oil
  • ½ tsp. butter or margarine
  • 12-by-9-by-3 inch lasagna pan
  • A large pot to boil lasagna
  • A large skillet for browning ground beef
  • 2 large mixing bowls
  • Aluminum foil

Step1
Prior to cooking let sour cream and cream cheese soften at room temperature for about 2 hours.
Step2
Add Canola oil and boil water in large pot.
Step3
While water heats up, mix sour cream, 1½ boxes (12 oz.)cream cheese, and onion soup mix. Add 1¼ to 1 1/3 packets of onion soup mix, seasoning with it until desired taste.
Step4
Add lasagna noodles to water and boil until pliable. Do not overcook.
Step5
Place ground beef in skillet (only about half will fit) and add 1 tsp. garlic powder, 1 tsp. onion powder and ½ tsp. salt. Cook on medium heat until meat is brown throughout.
Step6
Drain lasagna noodles and allow most of excess water to dry.
Step7
Drain grease from ground beef, then repeat step four for the second half of ground beef.
Step8
Mix ground beef and spaghetti sauces in large mixing bowl.
Step9
Grease lasagna pan with butter or margarine.
Step10
Place lasagna noodles along bottom of pan, layer with cream cheese, sour cream and soup mixture. Then add a layer of ground beef and sauce mixture.
Step11
Repeat Step 9 until all (or most of) noodles and 2 mixtures are used.
Step12
Layer top with the 2 packages of shredded 4-cheeses.
Step13
Cover lasagna pan with aluminum foil.
Step14
Cook in preheated oven at 350 degrees F for about 1 hour, depending on oven.
Step15
Carefully remove pan from oven and allow to cool for about 20 minutes before cutting and serving.
Step16
Serve and enjoy! Makes about 9 servings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Serve with hot garlic bread if desired
  • Serve with vegetable of your choice
  • Meat lovers serving suggestion: serve a side dish of cooked hot sausage links in 1 26.5-oz. can of green pepper and mushroom spaghetti sauce.
  • Do not overcook lasagna noodles.
  • Be sure to allow cooked lasagna to cool before cutting. This will allow lasagna to settle and help hold it together when cutting and serving.
