Film and television are about having the right face, and person behind it. When auditioning for a part in a film or tv show you have one minute of time in front of the camera, and people behind it who know what they want, and sometimes don't know what they really need. By following a few basic rules, you can maximize your chances to be chosen for the big, or small screen.

How to audition for film and television

  1. Step 1

When you find out about an audition, either on your own or through your agent, get as much material about the part you are auditioning for as well as the production, and the production company. Be sure you have clean and sharp head shots and professionally-formated resume.

  2. Step 2

Before going to the audition, memorize your lines and gestures. Devise a history to the character you are playing and put yourself mentally into the scene in question. Rehearse in wardrobe appropriate for the part. If you can, rehearse in front of a camera and watch yourself afterwards. Try to do the part in a few different ways.

  3. Step 3

At the audition, come half an hour before your time is on and do NOT talk with the other actors waiting on line. Stay focused on your character. When admitted in to see the casting agent and/or director, be courteous, concise and professional, and be yourself. Introduce yourself to the camera with 'slate' then do your character. Afterwards, be prepared to be asked to do it different ways. The director wants to know how directable you are. After the audition, leave with a concise and professional 'thank you.'

  4. Step 4

The most difficult thing...Forget you auditioned, and move on with your life. If they want you, they will call you. Do NOT call them...it is the easiest way to lose the part. Remember the saying 'stop wanting it and you will get it'.

Tips & Warnings
  • Persistence is the essential ingredient of success.
  • Film and Television is about having the right biology and essence behind it. Do not think that you are an inferior artist or person if you don't get the part...It really is nothing personal.
