Step 1
Think about what kind of atmosphere you feel most comfortable in. Massage therapists may work out of their homes, at spas, in chiropractors' offices or in gyms.
-
Step 2
Consider whether you’d prefer a male or a female. If you’re not sure, book a session with each and see if you have a preference.
-
Step 3
Ask the massage therapist what methods she employs. Find out if she performs deep tissue, myofascial release, Thai, shiatsu, hot stone, light touch or Swedish If you have a particular medical condition, such as diabetes or cancer, or if you're pregnant, ask whether the therapist is trained to handle those special needs.
-
Step 4
If you have insurance coverage for massage, ask the therapist if he will give you a receipt for each visit or if he can bill your insurance company directly.
-
Step 5
Ask the massage therapist if you have the option of choosing the length of your treatment. Most massages last 1 hour, but some therapists may offer a thirty-minute or ninety-minute massage.
-
Step 6
Inquire about cost and ask if there’s a special rate if you become a steady client. If the price is out of your range, consider choosing a massage therapist in training if you live near a health and wellness center or massage school. They usually offer treatments for people who can’t afford massage otherwise.
