Greek mythology can be fascinating for readers of any age. Children especially are attracted to the stories of battles, monsters and supernatural events. Gods and goddesses with their powers seem like superheroes. Here are some tips to interest your child in great Greek myths.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Learn about the contest that started the Trojan War, the competition among three powerful, fierce goddesses to see who is the most beautiful. Focus on the war that followed. Kids love the idea of the giant wooden horse and the trick of the soldiers hidden inside, ready to jump out.
Step2
Explore the story of Pandora's box, and all the evil that comes out with the good, when the forbidden box is opened.
Step3
Read about Daedalus and Icarus. The boy who flew with his father on wax wings, all the way to the sun (against his father's orders) is fascinating, especially with illustrations.
Step4
Immerse yourselves in the tale of Persephone. The daughter who must leave her mother to spend six months in the underworld makes for a haunting story and also explains why we have seasons.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disney's film "Hercules" may be a way to trigger interest, but this can also backfire if kids become bored when you introduce them to books. The legend of Hercules is available in easy reader editions. Start with those.
  • Try the library or bookstore for exciting illustrated editions of classic myths.
  • When you read aloud, you may need to use simpler vocabulary than the book provides and be ready to answer questions.
