Keep Computers Safe Online

With so many viruses , spyware, and other threats online, surfing the internet is becoming more treacherous. But there are some basic practices you can adopt to keep your computer and information safer.

From Quick Guide: Antivirus Basics
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Before download or install certain applications for protection, make sure your operating system is updated. Almost all operating systems have some sort of security issue that requires an update or a patch to fix the problem, so make sure the one you use is current.

  2. Step 2

Install a firewall. Buy one of the top brands, such as Norton of McAfee. In a pinch, jump on the Internet and download one from one of the various software application download websites.

  3. Step 3

Run a scan on your computer at least twice a month, using antivirus software and a spyware utility. For more protection, you can also turn on real-time protection for both applications. Make sure these applications stay current.

  4. Step 4

If you are still concerned about your computer’s safety, install a router. Wireless or hard wired routers come in various strengths and price points. Having a router will add another layer of protection for your computer and allow you to have a home network.

  5. Step 5

If you shop online, make sure the site is secure by checking for the “lock” icon on the browser window. Also, the web address for secure sites should be “HTTPS” instead of just “HTTP”. The added “S” means that the website uses Secure Socket Layers or SSL.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never leave your computer on continually while connected to the Internet. This may allow an intruder to hack your computer.
  • If you are worried about someone using your Internet connection, power down your router and/or modem when not in use.
