Since the ban on lead-based paint in 1978, children who live in newer homes have shown lower lead levels in their blood. However, in areas with older housing, elevated blood levels are still a problem. Lead poisoning is a significant health concern in some communities. There are some guidelines to determine whether your child should undergo a lead screening test.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Determine the age of the house or apartment you live in. Buildings and homes constructed prior to 1978 have a high risk of containing lead paint. Repainting old woodwork only covers up the problem. A chip can still peel off and be eaten by a child.
Step2
Ask your child’s caregiver how old her home is. In addition, pay attention to the homes of your child’s playmates. Many old homes pose a lead poisoning risk. If your child plays around these risks, he should have a lead screening.
Step3
Consult with your doctor about arranging a lead screening for your child if a close friend or sibling has lead poisoning. Children playing together often come down with similar symptoms.
Step4
Notify your doctor if your child has swallowed an item you suspect contains lead. Even children who appear healthy can have elevated levels of lead in their blood, which may cause health problems.
Step5
Schedule a lead screening for your child if he is showing symptoms of lead poisoning. These include irritability, appetitive loss, weight loss, constipation, fatigue and insomnia.

Tips & Warnings

  • A child who has elevated levels of lead in his blood may receive treatment with chelating agents that bind the lead particles and remove them from the bloodstream.
  • Lead can remain in the body for years. If you suspect your child was exposed at a young age, have him screened now, even if the exposure occurred years ago.
