When winter is in full swing, it's time to enjoy the warmth of a fire in the fireplace. Before lighting that first fire you should check for cracks in the firebox mortar so that you don't start a fire within the walls of your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clean the fire box of any ash and soot before laying the mortar.

  2. Step 2

Fill any cracks with the mortar or with Heat-Stop. These products can be found at a local hardware store or brick yard.

  3. Step 3

Let the mortar or Heat-Stop dry for 24 hours or as directed on the package before lighting a fire in your fireplace.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean your firebox and chimney once a year for safety.
