The smelly hand card trick may be the most basic card trick out there. It is extremely easy to learn but can still be quite baffling if done correctly. If you're in search of finding complete amazement from an audience, young children love this trick.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deck of Cards
  1. Step 1

Invite a young person to witness your amazing card trick. Tell them that you can guess which card they pick by simply smelling their hand.

  2. Step 2

Fan out a standard deck of shuffled cards. Have your participant pick a card and memorize it.

  3. Step 3

Cut the deck in half and ask the participant to place the selected card on top of one of the half decks.

  4. Step 4

Take a peak at the bottom card of the deck that you are placing on top of the participant's card. This must be done on the sly without the participant noticing. Memorize this card.

  5. Step 5

Smell your participant's hand. Then smell the top of every card on the deck making it appear like you are going to find their card based upon the smell. Turn over each card as you smell it.

  6. Step 6

Take notice when you pass the card that you had memorized. The next card in the deck was picked by your participant. Smell that card and continue to smell and pass several more cards. At this point your participant will think that you've skipped over her card.

  7. Step 7

Pass about five more cards, and then take time smelling a card to make your participant think that you are going to pick the wrong card.

  8. Step 8

While you hold the incorrect card, tell your participant that the next card you will turn over is the card she chose. Pretend as if you are going to turn over the wrong card. Then go back into the discard pile and turn over the right card. Enjoy your victim's befuddlement and refuse to reveal your secret.

Tips & Warnings
  • Magic and card tricks are all about delivery. Rehearse what you are going to say to set up the trick. All the schtick will take attention away from how you are actually performing the illusion.
