How to get a job in a National Park

There are many opportunities available in national parks and monuments. These jobs could be an opportunity to work for a short or long term contract depending on the availability, the season and your own available time frame. This is a chance to experience a special place and get paid, too.

1. Make a list of the parks and monuments where you might be interested in work.
2. List possible geographical areas where you might like to go. What do you think you would like and dislike about a particular place? Consider the recreational, scenic areas and the average weather conditions.
3. Make a list of the skills and work experiences you have to offer an employee.
4. Start your search on the internet or other employment services to see what is available and when the work would begin.
5. Write your resume and have any necessary documentation available for an application.
6. Read the job announcement very carefully as each place has their own specific requirements and application processes. The deadlines to apply sometimes come very quickly. You need to have your information ready on time.
7. Apply early in the season. Send in your application and expect to have an answer within about 45 days.

Tips & Warnings

• Consider whether the park of your choice is close to an urban area or in a more remote location. Sometimes housing and transportation can be a problem. Also check to see if the altitude and average climate is suitable for you to work there.
• Living and working in an altitude or climate that you are not used to can possible be more stress than you are able to handle. It is quite different from just taking a short vacation just to visit a new area.
