Unlock your pizza dough’s hidden potential with this easy recipe for a sausage and peppers calzone. Most ready-to-bake pizza dough will yield enough dough for two calzones.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pizza dough
  • Jar of pizza sauce
  • 1 cup of fresh mozzarella cheese
  • 1 link of Italian sausage
  • ½ green bell pepper
  • ½ red bell pepper
  • ½ small white onion
  • Olive oil
  • Small bowl
  • Frying pan
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Cookie sheet or pizza stone

Step1
Preheat the oven according to the pizza dough package directions.
Step2
Remove the casing from the sausage link, crumble the meat and cook in the frying pan over medium-high heat. Place the fully cooked sausage in the bowl, and then set aside.
Step3
Slice the onion and peppers into thin slices, sauté in olive oil over medium heat. Add the cooked onions and peppers to the bowl of sausage, mix, and then set aside.
Step4
Cut the mozzarella cheese into small cubes. Set aside.
Step5
Prepare the pizza dough according to the package directions, but instead of shaping it into a pizza cut it half (if there is enough dough for two calzones) and roll each piece out into a rectangle. Place each piece of dough on the cookie sheet or pizza stone.
Step6
Add the filling. Spoon some sauce onto one half of each rectangle of dough. Leave the edges free of sauce and ingredients so you can seal up the calzone later. Add half of the sausage, peppers and onions mixture on top of the sauce. Add half the cheese and top it with a small amount of sauce.
Step7
Fold the other half of the dough over the filling. Seal the edges by folding the bottom edge over the top and pressing them together.
Step8
Gently cut two or three slits into the top of each calzone.
Step9
Place in the preheated oven and bake according to the package directions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the bottom of the calzone before removing it from the oven. If it's golden brown, then the crust is fully cooked.
