Starting a birthday journal with your children is an excellent way to share your thoughts and feelings with them as they get older. It is an easy way to create a keepsake for them that they will cherish forever. Read on to learn how to start a birthday journal tradition for your children.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A journal for your child

Step1
Select a journal for your child that you will keep and fill as they grow. You can make the journal as elaborate or simple as you want. There are places where you can order monogram journals or have them personalized. You can also purchase very cute journals inexpensively at local stores.
Step2
You add to this book each year on their birthdays, writing them special and personal letters about what they have done this year and your thoughts and feelings about milestones that they reach. You can include photos if you want from their birthday or of you and them together throughout that year. You may include wishes and blessings for them that you would like to share.
Step3
You can also include in your journal letters about significant days in their lives such as when they start kindergarten, first day of high school, the day they get their driver's license and their high school graduation day. It will be special for them to see how you felt at each of these events.
Step4
Fill this book until they turn 18 or any other milestone you chose, maybe when they graduate college, or turn 25. You can gift the book to them as a special birthday present that they will surely cherish for a lifetime.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can start the tradition no matter how old your child is, don't think that you are unable to create this special keepsake just because you did not start it earlier. You may write a letter to your child in the beginning that explains why you have chosen to keep the journal now and a little bit about your earlier memories. Then continue with the letters yearly on birthdays and special occasions.
  • You can start the tradition even before birth if you chose to. You may write a letter to the baby about finding out you were expecting, how you chose their name, or about the day they were born, or other special days and events.
  • Keep a separate journal for each child in your family.
