Step 1
Research the cave you plan to excavate. Are there rivers? How deep does the cave go? Are there cliffs? What type of reptile/insect life is in the cave? You need to know if the cave is the type you would like to explore or if you should move on to another type of cave.
-
Step 2
Eat an energy-packed meal full of water and fruits within an hour or two of your excavation. Stay away from sugar, as this will drain much of your energy. Be sure not to eat too much, or you'll feel sluggish.
-
Step 3
Dress warmly in clothes that you don’t mind becoming mud-stained. Caves are cool even when the temperatures are warm outside. You don’t want to be caught deep in a cave shivering, as this will drain your energy.
-
Step 4
Wear high work boots. Remember that the rocks inside of a cave are very slippery. Be sure the books fit your correctly. Ill-fitting boots could cause you injury.
-
Step 5
Test your flashlights. Be sure to put in new batteries. Flashlights of two or more sizes would be best so that you can adjust depending on the situation within the cave.
-
Step 6
Fit your hardhat to your head. You want your hard hat to fit properly or you might lose it during the trip.
-
Step 7
Bring a cell phone. Call friends before entering the cave to let them know your location. Reveal how long you expect your trip to last. Be sure that they know exactly where you are, and agree on a time that you will call them again so that they can contact the appropriate parties if they don't hear from you.
-
Step 8
Prepare a small provisions bag with water and lightweight snacks in case you are in the cave longer than expected and need an energy boost.
