Ostara is the pagan celebration of the spring (or vernal) equinox and focuses on representations of new life, returning light and warmth, and fertility. A feast for your family or pagan circle is an excellent way to celebrate any Sabbat.

Things You'll Need:

  • Ingredients
  • Serving dishes

    Plan the Menu

  1. Step 1

Decide on the details for the feast. Will it be for immediate family, your private circle or coven, or a larger community? It's also helpful to determine any specific focus you want to add to the standard meanings mentioned above. Ostara falls on the equinox, which can be any time between March 19th and 22nd, so plan your dinner accordingly.

  2. Step 2

Choose your main dish. A carnivore main dish should include fish or ham. Traditionally, people lived throughout the winter with the meat they cured and stored during the autumn slaughter. Ostara was a time to use up the last of the cured meats as spring came again, thus the ham. Fish is also traditional because Pisces is prevalent in the sky at this time. If you need a vegetarian main dish, something with eggs is most appropriate--perhaps a vegetable quiche or frittata.

  3. Step 3

Select your side dishes. The most appropriate foods are green leafy vegetables, the first fruits of the season, early vegetables, nuts and grains. Consider a spinach and strawberry salad, herb sautéed asparagus, rice pilaf with herbs and pine nuts, and a selection of cheeses.

  4. Step 4

Plan an appropriate beverage. Egg nog, because of the eggs in it, is great for Ostara. Fresh fruit juices and sparkling cider are also good choices because they celebrate the fruits of the spring.

  5. Step 5

Remember dessert! Most any celebration is better with dessert, and Ostara is no different. Candy, chocolate eggs, and other traditional Easter treats are all appropriate for Ostara. For a more special dessert, consider spice cake, lavender sugar cookies or any other recipe with floral accents or flavorings.

  6. Decorate for the Feast

  7. Step 1

Decorate your table in bright spring colors and designs. Gather any lively decor such as tablecloths, dishes, and any special holiday decorations. These will help set the tone for your Ostara feast.

  8. Step 2

Display real, plastic or papier-mâché eggs in bowls or hang them from tree branches with ribbon. Put out vases or bowls of fresh cut flowers to help bring spring into the house.

  9. Step 3

Put together small gift bags, each with a spring-colored or scented candle, some flower seeds and an herb sachet. These will make a welcome surprise for your guests.

  10. Prepare the Meal

  11. Step 1

Prepare the dessert the day before if possible. The more people you're cooking for, the more time you'll need to prepare everything.

  12. Step 2

Mix your beverages if necessary and keep chilled until guests arrive. Just before dinner, put them in a decorative pitcher or punchbowl.

  13. Step 3

Cook the rest of your meal and arrange on platters for buffet-style serving.

Tips & Warnings
  • Obviously, the choice to serve food buffet style is not a requirement but is often easier with large groups of people.
  • Be cautious about the fresh flowers if your guest list includes anyone with severe allergies or asthma. The pollen can set off a breathing problem.
