Cut the Bottom of a Christmas Tree
Cut the Bottom of a Christmas Tree

This article will help your live Christmas tree last longer in the stand.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • tree cutting saw
  • heavy gloves
  1. Step 1

AFTER BRINGING YOUR TREE HOME, CUT OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE TREE DIAGONALLY. This will be the first of two cuts you'll make. Measure about 2 inches from the bottom and saw it off in a diagonal direction. Because the sap from the tree has gathered there while sitting on the lot, this cut will open up the bottom for water to hydrate the tree.

  2. Step 2

PLACE THE TREE IN A BUCKET OF WATER FOR 1 HOUR. Once that first cut is made, the tree will immediately fill it with sap again. Put it in a bucket of water right away so that sap won't gather again and your tree will "drink" heartily for an hour.

  3. Step 3

MAKE THE SECOND CUT 1 INCH ABOVE THE BOTTOM. Once again, this will open up the clogged pores at the bottom. Your tree will be able to take up water now for a good month or so without getting dry.
