How to Be an Extra

I'M AN EXTRA! I'M AN EXTRA!

Being an extra in a movie or tv show doesn't pay a whole lot but can be a whole lot of fun! Here are some steps to take to get you on the big (or little) screen.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
SIGN UP WITH A CASTING AGENT/COMPANY. Many people think that all they have to do to become a movie/tv extra is to show up at a studio and they'll be on screen! The best route is to connect with companies like CENTRAL CASTING (centralcasting.org). When you do, they'll add you to the bottom of their casting list but at least it's the first step.
Step2
ONCE REGISTERED, CALL A DAY BEFORE YOU WANT TO WORK. The answering agent will ask you a series of questions for a fit or just tell you what opportunities exist in your area. Don't expect to be offered anything. It takes time for your name to be known at the agency but eventually, you will be placed.
Step3
DEVELOP A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH EVERYONE IN THE BUSINESS. Other extras, Assistant Directors, even they guys who "grip" the set. Everyone! The maxim holds true... "it's who you know." Having a good relationship with everyone gets you farther ahead and opens doors of opportunities that you should walk through. (This is just a flat out, life principle that everyone should work on).

Tips & Warnings

  • For more detailed information, see the article at: http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/movieextra/movieextrafull.html
  • Central Castings Website is centralcasting.org and is a nationwide service.
  • There are no guarantees of success.
  • Don't quit your day job! Extra' s make, on average, $60 per day for 8 hours of work. You do the math.
