Windows Vista is the great OS (Operating System) from Windows, with many enhancements, it makes using a PC easier for many newcomers to PC use. Sadly, many PC manufactures will load down their New PC's with shareware and programs that you may never use, but they will also slow the PC down. Sometimes, just removing the programs will help speed the PC up, but there are many programs that will still load when you start the computer, that you may not need

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Windows Vista Computer.

Step1
Press the Start Button Press the start button and type in "MSCONFIG" in the search bar and press enter. This will load the system configuration program on Windows Vista.
Step2
Select the Startup TAB Select the "Startup" TAB from the System Configuration tool. This will show you a list of programs that load when the computer starts.
Step3
Un-check all items Uncheck any program that you do not want to load at startup. HINT: You can un-check all items in this list and your PC will still start. Some things may not work correctly, but the PC will startup.
Step4
Selective Startup Select the "GENARAL" TAB on the System Configuration Tool and select the "SELECTIVE Startup" option. This will tell the PC to only load the programs that are selected in the list (if any) when the computer boots.
Step5
Restart to use changes Press OK on the System Configuration Tool. You will be presented with an option box to Restart Now or Restart Later. The changes you just made will not take effect until you restart, but this option let's you save and close anything you may have been working on prior to making the changes.
Step6
Once you have rebooted, you may or may not get a prompt to inform you that the system configuration has changed ( I have seen both ). Select OK to acknowledge the changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you find something not working correctly after making changes, you can always go back to the System Configuration Tool and check the program that is not working correctly.
  • Windows vista will load all programs necessary for it to start.
  • Typically I only allow virus software and spy ware programs load at startup
  • If you have a special video card program that loads at startup, you may want to allow it to load.
  • Many printers use the startup to load it's programs for scanning, printing and faxing at startup. If disabled some of these function may not work until you allow them to load at startup.
  • If you are running Spybot Search and Destroy, you may or may not get warning when you make changes (depending on version you are running), select "allow change" and select the "remember" option so the change can take effect.
