How to Cope with a Parent Dating

When a parent is divorced or widowed, there will inevitably come the time when he or she begins to date. It may be a difficult thing for the parent to transition into, but it can also be very difficult for you as a child to cope with. Here are a few ways to help make that process as easy as possible.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Recognize that your parent is a consenting adult and that dating should be a natural part of his life.
Step2
Talk with your parent about what her expectations are in the dating process. Does she want to get remarried? Just see what’s out there? This can help you identify any possible concerns.
Step3
Take the time to get to know the people your parent is dating. Volunteer to meet potential mates, as your relationship with the new partner is probably a great concern of your parent's.
Step4
Connect with your parent over dating adventures--you could find that you have a lot of stories to share with each other.
Step5
If you do not like or approve of the choice of partner, talk to your parent about what they see in the person, and try to recognize those qualities next time you are together. It could be possible that what you don’t like about the partner is simply the fact that that person is dating your parent.
