It's exciting to hire an interior designer and watch him turn your current house into a showplace. As a homeowner, you have a job to do as well. Before an interior designer can get to work, you need to have a general idea of how you want the interiors to look. An interior designer can lend her professional opinion on furniture, fabric, accessories and other items, but it's your personal tastes and needs that will set the tone for the overall theme. Do your homework ahead of time, and you'll be sure to get exactly the decor you envisioned.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Decorating magazines
  • Digital camera
  • Scrapbook or several loose sheets of paper
Step1
Flip through design magazines and cut out pictures of furniture, fabrics, paint colors and accessories that you like.
Step2
Visit furniture and paint stores to see the latest styles and trends. Take pictures with a digital camera of items that appeal to you. Write down what you like about each item.
Step3
Jot down the cost of furniture, appliances, fabrics and accessories whenever possible. This will give you a good idea of the amount of money needed to create your look.
Step4
Compile magazine pictures, photographs and notes into a scrapbook, or glue them onto several sheets of paper and staple the papers together so none will get lost.
Step5
Arrange for a meeting with an interior designer. Bring your ideas to the meeting. Be sure that the interior designer understands your vision and can transform it into a coherent design scheme.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't worry if the pictures you choose do not fit into a single design style. A professional designer will be able to find the common theme in the items you like.
  • If you see a picture of a whole room but you only like one or two pieces, cut it out anyway. Circle the furnishings in the room that appeal to you.
