Frostbite is damage to the body tissues caused by exposure to extreme cold. Toddlers are especially susceptible to frostbite because they have a tendency to remove hats, gloves and other items that may safeguard their tender skin against frostbite. Toddler frostbite can occur anytime skin is exposed to a temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below; risk of toddler frostbite is increased if the weather is especially cold and windy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Warm water

Step1
Warm the affected area. If there is no chance of refreezing, the frostbitten area should be warmed by immersing in warm, not hot, water.
Step2
Remove the affected area from the water when it returns to its normal color.
Step3
Do not rub the affected area or place over a fire in order to regain warmth.
Step4
See a doctor immediately if you are unable to return the affected skin back to normal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Frostbite can be prevented by wearing warm clothing, including warm socks, insulated boots, and thick gloves or mittens.
  • Most frostbite damage usually heals within a few months, but it is not uncommon to have lasting sensitivity to cold.
  • Extreme frostbite can result in the affected areas having to be amputated. Safeguard your toddler to avoid this potentially devastating scenario.
