Step 1
Talk to your parent about what you can do to help, and what he or she is comfortable with. You are there to support them, to offer your love and your services, so it is important to keep in touch with their needs.
-
Step 2
Share the responsibilities with other loved ones and friends. A great way to do this is to create a schedule and a list of daily necessities so people can easily transition into the caretaking role.
-
Step 3
Take time for yourself. Though it may seem like your parent's condition is the only thing you can focus on, have activities that are just for you: take up a hobby, go for a run, read a book or spend time with friends.
-
Step 4
When it comes time, consider hiring a hospice worker to come to your home. They are trained professionals who have experience in how to administer end-of-life care.
-
Step 5
Make sure that paperwork and arrangements are in order well in advance. This may seem like the last thing you want to do, but preparation is important and will make it all that much easier to handle when the end comes.

Step 6
Have the difficult conversations. Ask the questions you always wanted to know the answers to. You will be glad you did.
