An effective uppercut punch could mean the difference between victory or defeat in a pugilistic contest. It's the atomic bomb in your otherwise conventional arsenal. Here is how to deliver this punch with ease and power.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get in the standard boxing on-guard position with your chin tucked into your chest. Lean forward slightly while simultaneously rotating your shoulders and hips counterclockwise (if your delivery is a left uppercut).

  2. Step 2

Move the punching hand forward, then up, just before you impact with the target. Picture the motion of shoveling snow. You dig and then lift.

  3. Step 3

Use the power of pushing off the rear leg by raising the rear heel for bone-crushing results.

  4. Step 4

Keep the elbows close to the body for defense and maximum power in the execution of the punch.

  5. Step 5

The bottom of your fist should be facing you when hitting your target. Keep the fist clenched throughout the motion to prevent injury to your fingers.

Tips & Warnings
  • This punch can be practiced by hanging a heavy bag on its side from the ceiling and striking it from underneath. When you can lift the bag substantially with a single punch without pushing, you will begin to understand the uppercut.
