Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Consider the "footprint" you leave behind as a traveler and try to lessen it in any way possible. Completely clean up after a picnic or cookout, for example, and of course never, ever litter even in the most "innocent" of ways.
Step2
Think about obtaining a hybrid vehicle or using public transportation for your travels. You’ll waste less gas, save money (in the long run) and do less harm to the environment.
Step3
Be respectful of the people you meet and the customs you encounter while traveling. If a traditional local food seems distasteful to you, just don’t eat it—but commenting on its purported grossness is about as rude as you can get.
Step4
Make a concerted effort to plan farther ahead whenever possible. You’ll get better deals, have your first choice of accommodations, and save yourself a lot of stress.
Step5
Think about donating to a local cause, even in small amounts, during your travels. Looking back on a trip to a state park, for example, wouldn't it be nice to know your generosity will help keep it clean and protected in years to come?
Step6
Try to be more patient and understanding when it comes to hotel check-ins, restaurant dining and other frequent traveling activities. You’ll leave a good impression, but more importantly feel much better about yourself than the guy screaming about his room not being ready yet.
Step7
On a related note, tip fairly and keep in mind the hardworking housekeepers at your lodgings. Respect those staying in adjoining rooms by not cranking your TV volume late at night, or slamming your door during an early check-out.
Step8
Make a distinct effort to try new things and visit new places. Sure it’s nice to return to a favorite vacation spot, but discovering new treasures can be just as gratifying.
