Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pinking shears
  • Old greeting cards
  • Curling ribbon
  • 3 wide mouthed jars or quart size zipper bags
  • Plastic wrap
  • Rubber bands
  • Gel or glitter pens
  • Amish Friendship Bread Starter

    Start It Up!

  1. Step 1

Pour warm water over yeast in mixing bowl. Add 1 Tbsp. sugar. Let sit until bubbles begin to form.

  2. Step 2

Add milk and remaining sugar, mixing well with wooden spoon.

  3. Step 3

Fold in flour, mixing well. Resulting batter should be thin and drippy.

  4. Step 4

Pour batter into wide mouth plastic jar. Cover with plastic wrap, secured by a rubber band. Set aside for a day.

  5. Feeding Your Starter...

  6. Step 1

Day 1 is the day you make your starter. Stir batter.

  7. Step 2

Day 2 through 4: stir batter.

  8. Step 3

Day 5: add 1 cup each of flour, sugar, and milk. Stir well.

  9. Step 4

Day 6 through 9: stir batter.

  10. Step 5

Day 10: Add 1 cup each of milk, flour and sugar. Stir well. Today you will divide your starter into 4 parts: 1 cup for 2 friends, 1 cup to make bread, and 1 cup to make more starter.

  11. Mmmmm! Do I Smell Bread?

  12. Step 1

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Whisk eggs together until frothy. Add Amish Friendship Bread Starter and mix well.

  13. Step 2

Add flour and mix well. Add raisins and nuts.

  14. Step 3

Place mixture in greased non-stick bread pan or tube ring cake mold.

  15. Step 4

Mix together creamed butter, brown sugar and nuts. Sprinkle on top of dough. Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes or until topping begins to brown.

  16. Give It Away!

  17. Step 1

Using pinking shears, cut gift tag sized pieces from old greeting cards. Use glitter pens or gel pens to write a greeting to your friend or family member who will be receiving this gift.

  18. Step 2

Fill each jar (or quart zipper bag) with 1 cup of starter. Cover with plastic wrap and secure with rubber band.

  19. Step 3

Tie gift tags in place around mouth of jar. Decorate jar with curling ribbon.

  20. Step 4

Feed remaining starter as on Day 1.

Tips & Warnings
  • Amish Friendship Bread starter can be frozen for later use. Just pour 1 cup into a quart size zipper bag and freeze. Batter will need a few hours to thaw and come to room temperature before use after freezing.
  • If your friends start avoiding you when they see you coming with more starter, you can freeze the batter to stop the increasing action.
