Blood Feathers
Blood Feathers

Blood feathers are new feathers that the blood supply has not yet been cut off to them. If your bird breaks a blood feather, it is best to deal with it immediately.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Towel
  • Pliers/your fingers
  • Corn starch or flour
  1. Step 1

Put corn starch or flour on the feather for the moment. This will stop the bleeding temporarily. No QuikStop powder, this will burn and sting.

  2. Step 2

Hold the bird close and secure (with a towel) and maybe get someone to help you. Support the wing, and grip it close to the skin (not the skin itself)

  3. Step 3

Pull in the direction the feather is growing (with either your fingers or the pliers, not tweezers). Don't hesitate or twist it, just one straight pull.

  4. Step 4

Usually it will stop bleeding, but it the wing is, it'll only last a second or two. Get a Kleenex or towel and put pressure on the area. Most of the time, applying pressure 30-60 seconds will stop it. Maybe apply a bit more flour or corn starch, and then place your bird back in its cage.

  5. Step 5

Cover half the cage and talk calmly to your bird. Keep an eye on him/her, although it should be better now.
